The Histology Tech is responsible for the following:

  • Embeds, cuts, mounts, stains, and coverslips tissue specimens.
  • Processes and stains Cytology specimens for diagnosis by Pathologists.
  • Performs general immunohistochemistry, non-muscle enzyme histochemistry, and all classes of special stains, according to physician orders, established protocols, and scheduled rotations.
  • Performs quality control on stains performed, including lot-to-lot validations. Assists with stain validations.
  • Troubleshoots in Histology as appropriate.
  • May provide guidance and orientation to new staff or Histology Interns.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties to support laboratory operations including monitoring temperature controlled equipment, stainer and equipment maintenance, changing stain reagents and managing inventory.
  • Assists with infection control through cleaning and maintenance of instruments and laboratory and disposal of excess tissue, waste stains and reagents.
  • Archives pathology materials.
  • Ensures laboratory’s compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements, and Hospital and departmental policies, including safety, chemical hygiene, and infection control.
  • Develops procedures and/or follows established procedures for quality control and quality assurance, and assures continual implementation.

The Histology Tech must have the following:

  • One year histology experience
  • Certification as a Histolotechnician or Histotechnologist (HT/HTL) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred:
  • 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), OR an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree is required
