Position Summary/ Department Summary:
This Nurse Practitioner will work primarily in Neuro Critical Care (a consult role) but will also flex to cover Epilepsy Service as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
Neuro Critical Care Service:

  • Caring for patients in the Neurocritical Care Service. The Neurocritical Care Service is a consultative service supporting critically ill pediatric patients from infants to young adults who are admitted to the intensive care units at Boston Children’s Hospital with neurological or neurosurgical conditions or who are at risk of developing neurological complications
  • The Nurse Practitioner will perform patient assessments, medical histories, physical exams, and plan and implement plans of care in collaboration with supervising Neurocritical Care Consult Attendings for patients in the medical, surgical, neonatal and cardiac ICUs at Boston Children’s Hospital who are followed by the Neurocritical Care Service
  • In collaboration with physicians on the Neurocritical Care Service, the Nurse Practitioner will enhance continuity of care, facilitate, and coordinate a comprehensive plan of care, have ample opportunities to participate and support ongoing research studies in the ICUs, and offer their expertise in nursing as a consultant to nursing and collaborating medical teams in the ICUs.
  • Contributing to the knowledge base of the profession and specialty programs through publications, presentations, and participation in the work of professional organizations.

Epilepsy/Neurology Service:

  • First line care of Epilepsy and Neurology patient population on the inpatient neuroscience unit, including assessment and medical history, physical exams, diagnosis, and family centered care of patients and their families.
  • Consult in an interdisciplinary manner on all assigned inpatients during daily rounds and managing assigned patients throughout the course of the day.
  • Participating in ongoing research and quality improvement initiatives, as well as facilitation of patient/family and multidisciplinary team education.
  • Assisting with admissions, discharges, care coordination, monitoring and counseling of patients, including telephone consultation.
  • Assisting with the transition to home, continuity of care across the continuum, and family support and education.
  • Contributing to the knowledge base of the profession and specialty programs through publications, presentations, and participation in the work of professional organizations.

Working 36 hours per week, days with a rotating weekend requirement (approx. every 3rd weekend) (No nights no holidays)

Minimum Qualifications
Education:

  • A Master of Science in Nursing

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years acute care experience as a RN or NP required
  • New graduate NPs will be considered with strong acute care and/or neuroscience nursing experience.
  • 1-3 years NP experience strongly preferred
  • Previous neuroscience and pediatric clinical experience strongly preferred
  • Excellent critical thinking and communication skills required.

Licensure/ Certifications:

  • MA licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse and certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Certification with specialty area expected within 3 years.
