Position/Department Summary:
Manages the operational, technical, and financial aspects of assigned laboratory section(s) and sets the professional standard by which the section(s) operates. The manager establishes and implements the clinical, operational, fiscal, and quality programs of the laboratory in a manner that is consistent with the goals of the institution, the Department of Laboratory Medicine, and the needs of the clinicians of the hospital and is in full compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing the supervisors and staff of a lab section(s), ensuring all work performed in the section(s) is accurate and completed within established or agreed upon turn-around times.
  • Providing leadership and guidance in the development and evaluation of clinical practice and technical and departmental procedures and promotes professionalism.
  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating new methods, techniques, or equipment and makes recommendations to the director.
  • Developing and implementing equitable criteria and processes which meet system standards for selection, evaluation, promotion, and terminations of all staff within designated area of responsibility.
  • Interviewing, selecting, promoting, disciplining, and discharging employees in accordance with personnel policy and practice.
  • Reviewing performance appraisals and proposed merit increases, ensuring consistency amongst employees.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, laws, and requirements of requisite agencies by employing appropriate systems/processes.
  • Developing, evaluating, and is accountable for meeting section budget.
  • Leading individuals and work groups to continuously improve performance by creating an environment that ensures application of quality principles and techniques to achieve desired outcomes and fosters excellence, sensitivity, and leadership.
  • Developing and implementing equitable criteria and processes for evaluation, promotion, and termination of all staff within designated area of responsibility that meet system standards.
  • Coordinating research studies as determined by the director(s).
  • Maintaining professional liaisons with area schools and universities.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Medical Lab Science

Experience:

  • 3 years clinical laboratory supervisory experience

Certification/Registration required:

  • Current registration/certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology ASCP in one of the following:
  • Certified Medical Technologist from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP),or Technologist registered/certified in one of the following:
  • Certified Technician in Hematology,
  • Certified Technician in Chemistry,
  • Certified Microbiology,
  • Certified Technician in Immunology, or Certified Tech in one of the following:
  • Blood Banking from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP),
  • Registered Microbiology from the American Association of Microbiology (AAM)
  • Certified Point-of-Care Testing Professional (CPP) from the ADLM Board of Certification

The posted pay range is Boston Children’s reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
