Position Summary
We are seeking a Behavioral Health Counselor to join our Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at Waltham, a 12-bed, secure inpatient psychiatric unit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitors and maintains safety of patients in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Maintains a physically safe environment. Checks and screens items brought into unit. Assists Registered Nurse to structure and modulate the level of stimulation in the unit. Conducts patient and environmental checks and identifies risk. Reports identified risk to Registered Nurse.
  • Supports and assists patients with routine activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating.
  • Identifies and reports changes in behavior that represent unsafe situations. Respectful re-direction of unsafe behavior and limit setting as needed.
  • Provides skilled therapeutic care, incorporating and applying established behavior management protocols as needed to meet treatment goals and objectives.
  • Assists in arranging and conducting group programs and activities.
  • Develops and maintains supportive relationships with patients and families. Identifies specific needs of patients and families and incorporates into patient care as appropriate.
  • May collect, measure and record basic patient data, such as vital signs, intake, and output, and obtains specimens according to established procedures and schedules.
  • Records medical data and care provided in patient medical record in accordance with established documentation standards.
  • Serves as member of multidisciplinary team for assigned patients.
  • Assists in planning and implementing individual treatment plans and communicates patient status, observations, and recommendations.
  • Participates in patient care rounds and team meetings.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of current occupational practices and techniques through participation in professional organizations, attendance at workshops, in-service sessions, and other continuing education programs.
  • 28 hours/week, 8-hour shifts, day/evening rotation, occasional nights, every other weekend and rotating holidays. Straight evenings with every other weekend and rotating holidays also considered.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:

  • High School Diploma/GED required. Associate’s Degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) at start date.
  • De-escalation training (Crisis Prevention Institute, or other equivalent training).
  • Welle De-escalation training within one month of hire for new hires at this level.
  • Practical experience in a behavioral health or educational setting required.
  • Practical experience in a Pediatric behavioral health or educational setting preferred.
  • Internal: 1-2 Years of experience as a Behavioral Health Tech at BCH.
  • External: 1-2 Years of experience as a Behavioral Health, Mental Health Counselor or similar role in a similar setting.

The posted pay range is Boston Children’s reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
