This position supervises interpreter staff and ensures quality patient experiences through the effective management and coordination of regular and per diem interpreter staff. Supports department leadership by providing guidance to assigned language staff and per diem interpreters. Monitors, prioritizes and follows-up on work assignments to ensure patient/family needs are met in accordance with department/hospital standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise interpreter staff, including interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, and ongoing development. Assign and coordinate interpreter schedules to meet patient and family needs in alignment with departmental and hospital standards. Hold regular meetings with staff to review assignments, procedures, and schedules.
- Plan and oversee the daily operations of assigned language interpreters. Responsibilities include managing arrival and departure times, handling triage issues, scheduling weekly coverage and rotations, and managing absences. Ensure adequate interpreter coverage across all areas to meet clinical and scheduling needs. Assign courtesy translations to interpreters with appropriate skill sets.
- May be involved in making hiring recommendations to the Interpreter Services Manager. Provide supervision, training, and ongoing performance feedback. Develop and deliver in-service training and continuing education programs to support staff development.
- Oversee the collection and monitoring of data, including usage statistics and quality assurance metrics, for assigned language interpreters.
- Conduct performance reviews for assigned interpreter staff. Coordinate peer reviews and gather provider feedback. Keep the manager informed of staff performance and development needs.
- May provide interpretation services in your designated language for patients and families with limited or no English proficiency. Accurately interpret complex and sensitive medical information, including diagnostic procedures, surgeries, and treatment plans. Translate and proofread documents for accuracy. Identify and address cultural differences that may impact communication.
- Provide training on medical interpreting ethics and standards of practice to regular, per diem, and associated interpreter personnel.
- Deliver training to hospital staff on effective collaboration with interpreters and on cross-cultural communication best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- An Associate’s level degree or higher is strongly preferred.
Experience:
- A minimum of three years of experience in medical interpreting is required.
Certifications:
- National Certification for Medical Interpreters is preferred.
